itch.io is a website for users to host, sell and download indie games. Itch.io also allows users to host game jams, events where participants have limited time (usually 1–3 days) to create a game.

Objective 🤹‍♂️

Identify the weak spots of itch.io and create a better solution and present it in any form.

Trouble in the paradise 🤯

The itch.io is designed in such way very simple, classic website way. But still I had hard time to understand the visual and information hierarchy. Here are some basic things that strike me the very first time.

The side main navigation is not having a consistent UX behaviour to act as a main navigation. Any selection on Img.1 it takes to corresponding page but then it act as a filter for the rest of the pages (Img.2 and Img.3). It really breaks the primary navigation of the website and user lacks the continuity.

Black and red are the two colors used in overall webpage to show active and default states. So the home page top navigation confuses it with “Winter Sale 2021” as active page.

It made it hard to understand on which page user currently is and breaks the top level navigation

“Upload Game” is a placeholder for a non logged in user and it is getting missed in between other elements

The home page is rendered with different sections like Download banner, Promo Banner, Games by sections in a grid layout. Where the ‘Promo Banner’ visually looks like an overlap to the ‘Download banner’ because of the clipped game artwork and color of promo banner background with the close button.
